We’re currently seeking a Assistant Controller to join our Headquarters team! The Assistant Controller is responsible for leading the Company's accounting operations and ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting. This position oversees the general ledger, month-end close, fixed assets, leases, accounts payable, revenue accounting, and field accounting processes for a multi-unit retail organization with over $1 billion in annual revenue.
Partners closely with Finance, Operations, Tax, Internal Audit, IT, and external auditors to maintain a strong control environment, support business growth initiatives, and drive continuous process improvement. This role leads a team of accounting professionals responsible for maintaining compliance with U.S. GAAP. What You Will Do: Financial Reporting & Close Process: Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
Review journal entries, account reconciliations, flux analyses, and financial statements. Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies. Oversee preparation of supporting schedules for SEC reporting, if applicable. Monitor accounting developments and implement new accounting standards. Retail & Multi-Unit Accounting Operations: Ensure accurate accounting for hundreds of retail locations and centralized support functions.
Develop scalable accounting processes to support growth through new store openings, acquisitions, and business initiatives. Partner with operations leadership to improve financial controls and reporting visibility across the field organization. Internal Controls & Compliance: Maintain and enhance a robust SOX-compliant control environment. Coordinate internal and external audits and serve as a primary accounting contact.
Ensure compliance with company policies, financial regulations, and accounting standards. Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team. Establish performance goals and succession plans for accounting managers and staff. Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer service. Recruit and retain top accounting talent. Process Improvement & Systems: Identify opportunities to automate accounting processes and improve efficiency.
Partner with Finance Systems and IT teams to optimize ERP and financial reporting platforms. Lead accounting participation in system implementations, upgrades, and integrations. Drive standardization and best practices across accounting processes. Business Partnership: Partner with FP&A to explain financial results and support budgeting and forecasting activities. Collaborate with Treasury, Tax, Legal, Procurement, and Operations on strategic initiatives.
Support M&A activities including due diligence, integration planning, and purchase accounting. Prepare executive-level presentations and analyses for senior leadership. How You Will Shine: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent experience.
Experience: 10+ years of progressive accounting experience. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit processes. Experience within a large retail, consumer services, restaurant, hospitality, or multi-unit operating environment. Demonstrated leadership, analytical abilities, and communication skills with ability to influence.
Demonstrated team building, personnel coaching and development skills. Advanced ERP experience (Oracle Cloud preferred). Preferred: Public accounting experience with a Big Four or national accounting firm. Experience supporting publicly traded companies.
