Job Overview The Macy's 8-week Summer Internship Program in Assortment Planning provides exposure to retail strategy, merchandising, customer demand, and data-driven decision-making. As an Assortment Planning Intern, you will gain hands-on experience supporting sales, margin, inventory productivity, and business growth through assortment optimization and analytics.
The Assortment Planning team analyzes product performance, customer demand, vendor performance, and channel trends to ensure the right products are available in the right locations and quantities. By partnering closely with Merchants and cross-functional teams, the team develops assortment strategies that maximize profitability, meet customer needs, and enhance the shopping experience across both stores and e-commerce channels.
Macy's summer internship program provides interns with a hands-on and in-depth understanding of a core business function in retail. Interns have opportunities to directly impact the business as a key part of a team and by sharing new ideas. Macy's interns experience everything our culture has to offer through exposure to senior leaders and networking opportunities. The internship program may lead to an opportunity to work full-time with Macy's in our early careers program after graduation.
This internship program will be held in Macy's New York, New York Corporate offices. Receive professional development through a combination of hands-on learning and collaborative projects. Build relationships with other interns, business leaders, and team colleagues. Attend and participate in weekly business meetings to review and recap sales performance. Analyze product performance data and business trends to identify opportunities and make recommendations.
Support the development of assortment plans aligned with overall business and promotional strategies. Partner with Merchants and cross-functional teams to support strategic assortment initiatives. Assess assortment effectiveness by channel and respond to business opportunities. Conduct competitive and business trend analysis to identify opportunities for growth. Analyze reports related to channel demand, category performance, vendor performance, and product trends.
Support allocation and inventory management processes to ensure products are positioned to meet customer demand. Assist with business recaps and presentations by providing insights and recommendations. Demonstrate agility in reacting to in-season sales trends and changing business needs. Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality. Qualifications and Competencies High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Junior standing (rising senior at the time of the internship) pursuing a bachelor's degree with a strong academic record. Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred. All majors will be considered for this opportunity. Strong retail math, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze sales, margin, inventory turn, sell-through, and other key retail performance metrics; identify trends and opportunities; and translate data into actionable business recommendations.
Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas, and data analysis techniques; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and the ability to work with large datasets.
