Research shows that no Indigenous language in Canada is safe and that all are in varying stages of endangerment. Indigenous languages are fundamental to the identities, cultures, spirituality, relationships to the land, worldviews, and self-determination of Indigenous peoples. Indigenous languages have and continue to contribute to the strength of Canada as a whole, including biodiversity and the richness of linguistic and cultural heritage.

About the Role The Language Revitalization Specialist provides expertise, leadership, and coordination to support Indigenous language revitalization initiatives through the Indigenous Languages Knowledge Hub.

The position transforms research, data, and emerging practices into accessible resources, tools, and knowledge products that support Indigenous communities, language practitioners, educators, researchers, and partners. Working collaboratively with Knowledge Hub staff, Indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, language speakers, researchers, and external partners, the Language Revitalization Specialist helps ensure that language revitalization knowledge is mobilized, shared, and applied in ways that are culturally respectful, community-driven, and responsive to emerging needs.

This position serves as the bridge between research, knowledge mobilization, community engagement, and practical language revitalization outcomes. Key Responsibilities Language Revitalization Leadership Monitor and analyze promising practices, innovations, and emerging trends in Indigenous language revitalization. Identify opportunities to strengthen language learning, documentation, retention, and intergenerational transmission.

Provide advice and guidance on language revitalization approaches, methodologies, and resources. Support the development of national and regional initiatives that contribute to Indigenous language vitality. Works effectively across teams and contributes to Knowledge Hub and organizational priorities. Knowledge Mobilization Develop practical resources, toolkits, guides, fact sheets, briefing materials, and knowledge products for diverse audiences.

Translate research findings, technical information, and data into accessible and user-friendly materials. Support the dissemination of Indigenous language research, community projects, and innovative practices. Develop case studies and success stories that highlight community-led language revitalization efforts. Community and Stakeholder Engagement Build and maintain collaborative relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, language champions, educators, and researchers.
