Assistant Gardener – Private Estate – Dorking Surrey An exciting opportunity has arisen for a hands-on and experienced Assistant Gardener to join an established private estate in Dorking, Surrey, working alongside a long-standing Head Gardener. The estate features a beautifully maintained one-acre private garden, historically cared for by two full-time gardeners. The grounds are divided into two main areas, with the principal garden surrounding the main house and a separate area incorporating an established orchard.
The garden features mature planting, established borders and a range of attractive features throughout the grounds, including a couple of summer houses. The property has recently undergone a significant garden project, with substantial investment into the grounds. This has included replacing the former tennis court with a new pickleball court and surrounding landscaping, as well as the addition of an outdoor kitchen and entertaining area.
Working alongside the established Head Gardener, the successful candidate will play an important role in the day-to-day care and development of the gardens and wider grounds. Duties will include general garden maintenance, weeding, planting, pruning, lawn care, hedge and shrub maintenance, border work, seasonal tasks and maintaining the recently landscaped areas. The role will also involve keeping the wider estate areas neat, tidy and presentable, with the successful candidate expected to be proactive and able to identify work that needs to be carried out.
Previous professional gardening experience and a genuine interest in horticulture are essential. Experience within a private estate or similarly high-quality environment would be advantageous. The role will suit an enthusiastic, personable and self-motivated Assistant Gardener, with the ability to organise their own workload and take pride in the standard of their work. A calm, reliable and professional approach is important, along with good attention to detail.
The successful candidate will be joining a small, established team, working alongside a Head Gardener who has been at the estate for more than 10 years. Personality and team fit are particularly important, with the right candidate needing to work well within an established team and contribute positively to the day-to-day running of the garden. This is a full-time, permanent, live-out position. The working pattern is expected to be four days during the week, with some additional attendance required on Saturday and Sunday mornings for a couple of hours.
This will not necessarily be required every weekend, as the family spend periods away from the property, but some flexibility will be required.
