Band 5 Staff Nurse - THH4

You will care for patients who have undergone complex or challenging surgery under one of our four specialities (colorectal / upper GI / urology / sarcoma). Many of your patients will have had a stay in ITU or EPOC after their surgery and may have a long recovery time on the ward - many of your patients will have life-altering outcomes from their surgery. Responsible for between 6 and 9 patients, you will ensure accurate records are kept and appropriate action is taken to ensure good recovery and safe & timely discharge.

You will act promptly and take effective action if any of your patients become critically unwell. You will act as an advocate for your patients, ensuring a patient-focused approach to the delivery of care. You will need to communicate clearly and effectively with your patients, their relatives or carers, and other members of the MDT. Student Nurses are regularly placed on the ward; you will help with their training and development whilst ensuring safe practice is always maintained.

You will also undertake your own additional skills development and training. Daily expectations include - effective handover, prompt escalation of deteriorating patients, compassionate care, clear communication, teamwork, attention to detail and excellent clinical practice. Previous surgical ward experience in an acute secondary NHS care setting is essential for this role, and you must also demonstrate a passion for post-operative care and ERAS recovery.
