Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant | Gateshead Location: Gateshead Job Type: Full Time, Term Time Only Start Date: September 2026 Hours: 8:30am–4:30pm Pay: £98–£120 per day, dependent on experience Your experience doesn't have to come from a classroom. You could have the skills needed to become an excellent Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant . Protocol Education are working with a specialist SEMH school in Gateshead seeking a confident and resilient Teaching Assistant to join their team from September. The role is focused on supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs , helping them develop positive relationships, manage their behaviour and overcome barriers to learning.

Experience Is a Bonus Previous experience within SEMH, SEND, PRU or alternative provision would be beneficial, but it isn't essential. We would also welcome candidates with backgrounds in: Youth work. Residential or care settings. Sports coaching. Mentoring. Community work. Behaviour support. Supporting vulnerable young people. If you can build relationships, stay calm when situations become challenging and provide consistent support, your transferable experience could be a great fit.

The Role You will: Provide 1:1 and small-group support. Build positive and trusting relationships. Support pupils with behavioural and SEMH needs. Help pupils recognise and manage their emotions. Support emotional regulation. Identify triggers and appropriate coping strategies. Use positive behaviour strategies. Encourage pupils to engage with learning. Maintain clear and consistent boundaries. Support teachers within the classroom.

Help pupils develop confidence and independence. Support pupils during break and lunchtime. Encourage positive communication and social skills. Celebrate progress and achievements.
