Job Summary Chief of Police Las Vegas, NM 87701 Overview Salary Range $78,790.40 - $96,793.00 Salary Position Type Full Time -Reg Education Level High School or GED Category Staff Description SUMMARY: This position is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Department and has authority in all matters of Police and Fire Safety Operations including discipline as per authorization and jurisdiction set forth by state statute and designated by the Board of Regents, see Administrative Policy 100.

He/she exercises all lawful powers of his/her office and issues such lawful orders as are necessary to assure the effective performance of the department. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Ensures preparation of periodic and special reports, and assures that adequate records are maintained of all department activities. Responsible for the department's continued and efficient operation, for the enforcement of rules and regulations within the department, for the completion and forwarding of such reports as may be required by proper authority and for the department's relations with local citizens, the local government, and other related agencies.

Plans, directs, coordinates, controls and staffing all activities of the department. Enforces all laws coming within the department's legal jurisdiction. Controls the expenditures of department appropriations and prepares annual budget estimates of needs. Ensure cooperation with other law enforcement agencies in the apprehension and detention of wanted persons and with other agencies as appropriate.

Receives, evaluates and resolves complaints; attends civic club and school meetings to explain the activities and functions of the police department, and to establish favorable public relations. Formulates written administrative guidance in the form of policies, regulations and other orders governing activities of the Police Department. Ensures compliance with all laws, which the department or its officers have the authority to enforce.

Organizes, directs, and controls all resources of the department to preserve the peace, protect persons and property and enforce the law. Designates a Commander to serve as Commanding Officer in his absence. Assigns or transfers any member or employee of the department to or from any assignment whenever he/she shall deem such action necessary for the efficiency, discipline or morale of the department.

Investigate all cases of alleged or apparent misconduct by department personnel. Keeps himself/herself informed of departmental affairs, ensuring that the duties and responsibilities of members and employees are properly discharged. Promulgates all General and Special orders of the department and issued on this own authority orders, written and oral, consistent with his/her powers, duties and responsibilities.

Maintains a personnel record system in which shall be kept all pertinent information on all departmental members and employees. Works with Facilities Services to schedule required annual fire system and equipment maintenance/inspections. EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of certified law enforcement experience, two (2) of which must include supervisory experience.
