Job Overview The Ergonomist at SafetyCloud (SafetySA) delivers specialized occupational health and safety consultancy services across diverse industrial and corporate sectors. As a competent person under South African Ergonomics Regulations, the role involves identifying, assessing, and mitigating physical, cognitive, and organizational ergonomic risks to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), optimize workplace efficiency, reduce musculoskeletal disorders, and foster safer work environments.
Key Responsibilities Conduct Ergonomic Risk Assessments (ERAs) per Regulation 6 using methodologies like RULA, REBA, NIOSH Lifting Equation, and anthropometric analysis. Evaluate workplace setups, tool designs, vehicle configurations, cognitive workload, and fatigue risk factors. Formulate engineering, administrative, and design control measures per Hierarchy of Controls and Regulation 7. Collaborate with client teams to integrate ergonomic principles into procurement of machinery, tools, and furniture.
Develop and maintain Ergonomics Management Programmes, employee reporting systems, and Ergonomics Committees. Provide technical support for incident investigations involving human factors. Design and deliver tailored ergonomics awareness campaigns and task-specific training. Monitor effectiveness of control measures and compile professional consulting reports with risk ratings and action plans. Requirements Qualifications Postgraduate qualification in Ergonomics or Human Factors.
Formal training in physical, cognitive, and organizational ergonomics, biomechanics, anthropometry, and risk assessment methodologies. Professional registration as CPR (Certified Professional Ergonomist) or CEA (Certified Ergonomics Associate) with good standing in Ergonomics Society of South Africa (or IEA-aligned body). Demonstrated competence as a under Regulation 1 of Ergonomics Regulations. Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
Experience Minimum 2–3 years ergonomics assessment experience under supervision, preferably in mining, manufacturing, warehousing, construction, transport/logistics, healthcare, laboratories, telecommunications, energy/utilities, or office environments. Skills & Competencies Expertise in physical ergonomics (manual handling, postural analysis, repetitive movement, force analysis, seating, tool/vehicle evaluation).
Cognitive ergonomics (human-machine interaction, cognitive workload, fatigue risk, attention/information processing). Organizational ergonomics (shift work, work-rest scheduling, workload allocation, psychosocial risk, workflow optimization). Proficiency in assessment tools: RULA, REBA, NIOSH Lifting Equation, anthropometric analysis, office ergonomics tools, cognitive workload and fatigue assessment methods.
