The commitment includes a willingness to attend approximately 3 - 4 evening meetings per annum, plus ad hoc sub committees as required. We welcome applications from individuals with an understanding of good governance and high standards of personal integrity and impartiality. Experience within local or national government or with legal systems, tribunals or similar quasi-judicial bodies is desirable.
Basildon Borough Council currently has two vacancies for Independent Persons councillors as required by the Localism Act 2011. The Act requires the Council to have in place arrangements for dealing with complaints of breaches of the Councillor's Code of Conduct both by the Basildon Borough Council members and by Parish and Town Council members. Independent Persons are appointed to help promote high standards of conduct by the Borough, Parish, and Town Council members, and in particular to uphold the Code of Conduct adopted by the Borough.
The appointment of the Independent Person will be for a fixed term of 4 years. The position is voluntary, however, an annual allowance of £1,444.19 will be paid for time, travel and subsistence.
