It is the 3rd largest cancer centre in the UK and in addition to housing the Gynaecological Oncology surgical service (ward, theatres, outpatient clinics, central MDT, secretarial and office accommodation) it also encompasses within a single wing other specialist cancer surgery, non-surgical oncology including gynaecological medical and clinical oncology, state of the art imaging and radiotherapy services, pathology, cancer registry and clinical trials offices with protected research beds.

This is a locum post to cover a leave of absence, to maintain the existing complement of 6 Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeons, to ensure the Trust continues to appropriately manage all patients requiring treatment for gynaecological malignancy within national cancer waiting time targets. Following centralisation the Gynaecological Oncology Surgeons established outreach services across the Yorkshire region and this post will also provide an outreach clinic and a unit MDT on a weekly basis.

The surgical service is based on Ward J98, a dedicated 14-bed gynaecological oncology facility in Bexley Wing. There is a state-of-the-art theatre suite that includes high-definition laparoscopic equipment with a Stryker Spy-Phi for ICG sentinel node detection and support from a dedicated anaesthetic and theatre team. There is also an established robotic programme utilising the Da Vinci system which is housed in a separate purpose-built theatre suite within the main hospital, where the team has access on a weekly basis.

There is a HDU facility adjoining the theatre suite with the ITU located in a separate wing. Dedicated office space is provided within the Bexley Wing alongside a secretarial pool who help co-ordinate the service. What you will bring to the role The appointee will be expected to hold the MRCOG or equivalent, have completed higher specialist training in gynaecological oncology or equivalent and have the required surgical skills to fulfil the role.

The appointee must be able to work as part of a team in line with the Calman-Hine recommendations for the multi-disciplinary approach to the management of malignancy, have good communication skills and form good working relationships with colleagues, non-medical staff and patients. The appointee should be well organised and skilled in good time management. They will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of the responsibilities a consultant post brings.

Consultants are expected to routinely engage in relevant activities in their specialty that are focussed on quality improvement. This participation should be reflected at annual appraisal and job planning and will be discussed as part of clinical governance programmes and meetings. The Trust is a Teaching Hospital and therefore considers the active participation of consultant and other medical staff in teaching and training to be part of our core activities.

It is therefore expected that all consultants will be familiar with the principles of effective teaching and will enable the service and colleagues to fulfil their obligations to learn and teach about effective care. In the discharge of their responsibilities, the consultant will be expected to maintain and update their skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing professional development.
