The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. The PA will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies including but not limited to the BWH PA Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved clinical privileges, and BWH PA policy.Within the Brigham Obstetrics & Gynecology Group (BOGG), the PA is part of the care team, which supports attending physicians, fellows, and residents in the medical management of patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

This role would include postpartum rounding or providing care in the outpatient setting for obstetric and gynecology patients as a per diem.Qualifications The position is per diem and either ambulatory OB/GYN care at one of our 3 locations (Foxboro, Brookline or Westwood) or inpatient postpartum rounding at the main hospital in BostonOutpatient clinical duties:Competencies and tasks in routine care of ambulatory gynecologic or obstetric patients:Perform new OB visits, prenatal and postpartum visitsPerform routine and problem gynecologic visitsWrite daily visit notes and ordersWrite prescriptionsRoutine gynecologic and obstetrical examinationsPap smearsIUD insertionsEndometrial, vulvar, and cervical biopsies if indicatedInpatient Clinical Duties Competencies and tasks in routine care of hospitalized gynecologic or postpartum patients:Perform admission history and physical exam and accurately record in the patient recordChange surgical dressings, including wound packing and vacs, and removal of sutures and staplesWrite daily progress notes and ordersWrite prescriptionsImplement attending physician instructions for patient management in close cooperation with nursing staffRound with individual residents/teams as requested, report back to team leadersPerform procedures within the PA scope of practice and as directed by the attending physicianOrder and interpret appropriate laboratory testing and other special examinations as requestedDictate discharge summaries, complete discharge paperworkPrepare succinct and accurate sign-out to facilitate the smooth transition of patient care from one PA to another PA or physicianAssist in making appropriate post hospitalization appointments and referralsCommunicate with referring health care providers and institutionsAdditional competencies and tasks in routine care of postpartum patients: evaluate stability and progress of routine postpartum patientPhysical exam: appropriately evaluate uterine size, tenderness; perineal discomfort and healing; quality of Lochia; breast exam; cesarean section incision.Vital signs/chart/history: appropriately interpret vital signs in normal postpartum patient and in patient with complications including hypertension, bleeding, infection; appropriately interpret postpartum symptoms/issues including bleeding, lactation, extremity edema and tendernessCounsel and educate patients and family about postpartum events, activities, lactation, and contraceptionPrinciple Clinical Duties and Responsibilities :Provides direct patient care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, and/or procedural settingPerforms complete histories and physical examinations
