September 11, 2026 RESEARCH ASSISTANT II (BAND LEVEL 7) Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research Faculty of Medicine (Full-time, Contractual position to March 31, 2027 subject to renewal) The University will consider applications from qualified permanent staff who may be interested in a secondment, subject to departmental approval This competition may be used to fill identical positions in this unit within three (3) months of the closing date DUTIES The successful applicant will join NLCAHR's Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program (CHRSP).
CHRSP provides evidence- and policy-based decision support to the health system of Newfoundland and Labrador through an integrated knowledge translation (iKT) program that has been established since 2006. Core duties involve research assistance and project coordination for different types of CHRSP projects. Related work activities include Knowledge synthesis: developing and executing systematic-review / overview search strategies for research-based evidence in periodical indexes (e.g., Pubmed, CINAHL, EMBASE), Google Scholar, health research databases (e.g., Cochrane Library, Epistimonikos) and grey literature sources (e.g., government reports, non-commercially published reports); conducting critical appraisals (e.g., AMSTAR, Downs and Black); data extraction and synthesis; conducting interviews with key informants and focus groups; using mixed method approaches that may include analysis and interpretation of quantitative data and qualitative data (e.g., interviews, policy documents) to supplement the interpretation of synthesis findings.
Report writing and dissemination: Writing reports in multiple formats; Designing slide decks and delivering in-person and webinar group presentations; Research coordination: building inter-disciplinary project teams; coordinating project activities and consulting with project team members; scheduling, chairing and following up project team meetings; identifying and interviewing key informants. The successful applicant may also be called upon to perform the following additional duties: Participating in the review, assessment, and upgrading of CHRSP methodologies.
Providing research assistance and overall support to the Centre's Director including liaising with other University departments and with partner organizations in the provincial health system; providing supplementary support for research teams. Establishing contracts with external experts and initiating pay processes. Participating in one or more of the Centre's Research Exchange Groups. QUALIFICATIONS Experience (1-3 years) providing research support; completion of most coursework towards a Master's degree in health services research, clinical epidemiology, health policy, population/public health or a related discipline; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of primary health research, systematic reviews and meta-analyses methodologies. Advanced skills in communication both written and verbal, as well as strong organizational and collaboration skills are required. Experience with quantitative and qualitative research in social science, proficiency in technology, software, and data platforms (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Scholar, PubMed, CIHI, StatCan, Covidence, Zotero, Endnote) is also required.
Training and experience in analyzing and interpreting high quality quantitative and qualitative health research, coordinating and writing literature reviews, jurisdictional scans, environmental scans, research syntheses, overviews, and reports; effectively work both independently as well as collaboratively with a research team, expert or other partners is essential.
