Job Summary The Field Engineer I - Fiber is responsible for supporting the installation, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic network infrastructure. This entry-level to early-career role works closely with senior engineers, technicians, project teams, and customers to ensure reliable network performance and successful project execution. The Field Engineer I provides hands-on support for fiber deployments while developing technical expertise in fiber optic technologies, network connectivity, and field operations.

Key Responsibilities Assist with the installation, termination, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting of fiber optic cabling and connectivity solutions. Perform fiber certification testing using OTDRs, power meters, and other testing equipment. Support new network deployments, upgrades, relocations, and maintenance activities. Conduct inspections of fiber infrastructure and identify potential performance or service issues.

Troubleshoot physical layer connectivity problems and escalate complex issues when necessary. Read and interpret network diagrams, fiber route drawings, splice schematics, and engineering documentation. Document test results, service activities, project updates, and asset information accurately. Assist in maintaining fiber records, labeling standards, and network documentation. Support customer site installations and provide basic technical assistance during deployment activities.

Ensure all work is completed in compliance with safety standards, company procedures, and customer requirements. Collaborate with project managers, network engineers, and field operations teams to complete projects on schedule. Participate in after-hours maintenance activities or on-call support as required. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree in Telecommunications, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field preferred.

1-3 years of experience in telecommunications, fiber optics, network infrastructure, field services, or a related technical environment. Basic understanding of fiber optic technologies, cable types, and connectivity standards. Experience using fiber testing equipment or willingness to learn. Familiarity with structured cabling practices and installation standards. Ability to read technical documentation and follow engineering specifications.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Excellent communication and customer service abilities. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to customer locations as needed. Preferred Qualifications Fiber optic certifications such as: FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) BICSI Technician Certification ETA Fiber Optics Installer Certification Experience with fiber splicing and termination methods.

Knowledge of data center cabling environments. Familiarity with telecommunications construction and outside plant (OSP) infrastructure. Exposure to network technologies and connectivity troubleshooting. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Understanding of fiber optic installation and maintenance best practices. Ability to safely use hand tools, testing equipment, and installation materials. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to workplace safety and quality standards. Willingness to learn new technologies and develop technical expertise. Working Conditions Frequent work at customer sites, telecommunications facilities, construction environments, and data centers.

Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments, including varying weather conditions. May require climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, and standing for extended periods. Occasional travel and after-hours support may be required based on customer and project needs.
