Summary The CNC Laser Operator is responsible for setting up and operating CNC laser-cutting equipment to produce precision metal parts in accordance with blueprints, work instructions, quality requirements, and production schedules. This position loads materials, selects programs, adjusts machine parameters, inspects completed parts, and ensures work is completed safely, accurately, and efficiently.

Job Responsibilities and Duties Review blueprints, engineering drawings, work orders, and specifications to determine required dimensions, tolerances, material type and thickness, and cutting requirements. Set up and operate CNC laser-cutting equipment, including loading materials, selecting the correct program, and adjusting power, speed, focus, and other machine parameters. Perform pre-operation inspections and verify that equipment, tooling, guards, and work areas are in safe operating condition.

Inspect first-piece and in-process parts using appropriate measuring tools and identify and properly handle nonconforming material in accordance with quality procedures. Monitor the cutting process, make authorized adjustments, and report significant equipment, production, or quality concerns to the supervisor. Prepare or verify machine files, cutting paths, and part layouts in laser software to support accurate and efficient material use.

Complete required production records, job documentation, and material tracking accurately and on time. Perform routine operator-level cleaning and preventive maintenance, including checking lenses, nozzles, and coolant levels; promptly report repair needs. Safely move and stage raw materials, work-in-process, and completed parts using approved material-handling methods. Maintain an organized work area and follow PPE, lockout/tagout, housekeeping, and other company safety requirements.

  Qualifications Skills and Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Prior experience operating CNC laser-cutting or comparable metal-fabrication equipment preferred. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, work instructions, and specifications and apply basic shop mathematics. Ability to use measuring instruments such as tape measures, calipers, squares, and gauges.

Understanding of CNC controls, laser-cutting technology, material properties, cutting parameters, basic mechanical principles, and applicable CAD/CAM or laser software. Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce work within required tolerances and recognize quality or equipment concerns. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently or as part of a team. Work Environment This job operates in a manufacturing plant environment around operating machinery, sheet metal, moving equipment, noise, dust, and varying temperatures.

The position requires personal protective equipment and may involve exposure to sharp edges, pinch points, and other hazards common to metal fabrication operations. Physical Demands The employee must be able to stand for extended periods and frequently reach, bend, stoop, grip, push, pull, and handle materials, tools, and machine controls. The employee must lift and move materials or parts weighing up to 50 pounds and use assistance or approved lifting equipment when needed.

Specific vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus and inspect parts for accuracy.
