Job Title: Structural Welder – 1st Shift Job Description This role focuses on structural welding in a production environment, performing high-quality Mig and Flux core welds on carbon steel plate and structural components. You will interpret blueprints, set up and operate welding equipment, and produce precise welds in multiple positions while working on steady, planned projects in a structural welding shop.
Responsibilities Perform structural welding using Mig and Flux core processes on carbon steel plate and structural components. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan layouts and welding procedures accurately. Use tape measures, calipers, rulers, and other measuring tools to mark and verify dimensions before cutting and welding. Determine appropriate welding equipment, settings, and methods based on job requirements and specifications.
Set up components for welding according to specifications, including cutting material with powered saws to match measurements. Set and adjust amperage and voltage on welding machines to achieve proper weld quality and penetration. Weld proficiently in multiple positions, including 3G (vertical), overhead, and horizontal positions. Operate angle grinders to prepare parts for welding and to grind and finish welds to required standards.
Align and clamp components securely prior to welding to ensure accurate fit-up and structural integrity. Use manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to weld components in various positions as required by the job. Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to identify and correct flaws or defects. Maintain welding equipment and tools in safe working condition and report any issues promptly.
Work within a structural welding shop on a multi-building campus, following established safety procedures and production standards. Participate in a steady, planned production schedule, contributing to consistent output and quality. Essential Skills Proficient Mig welding skills with the ability to pass a 3G Mig weld test on 1/4 inch carbon plate. Ability to weld in vertical (3G), overhead, and horizontal positions.
At least 8 months of welding experience in a structural welding shop. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and structural drawings. Strong tape measure and layout skills, including accurate measurement and marking. Knowledge of setting and adjusting amperage and voltage on welding machines. Experience operating angle grinders for weld preparation and finishing. Ability to align and clamp components using calipers, rulers, and other measuring tools.
Capability to use manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in multiple positions. Basic equipment maintenance skills to keep welding tools and machines in safe operating condition. Additional Skills & Qualifications Structural fitting experience is preferred and may support higher-level responsibilities. Experience in industrial or production environments involving structural fabrication. Experience in structural welding and fitting with 2+ years of experience is beneficial for advanced roles.
Experience working with Flux core welding processes. Familiarity with fabrication workflows in a structural welding shop environment. Comfort working in a non-climate-controlled shop setting.
