Job Title: Commissioning Engineer (Elora) Job Description The Commissioning Engineer supports the testing, commissioning, startup, energization, and turnover of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities from pre-commissioning through commercial operation. This role focuses on large, grid-scale energy storage projects that enhance grid reliability and meet growing electricity demand across North America.
The position involves close collaboration with engineering, construction, project management, operations, utilities, equipment vendors, and contractors to ensure projects are commissioned safely, efficiently, and in full alignment with project requirements. The role offers significant field exposure, hands-on experience with advanced energy storage technologies, and the opportunity to contribute directly to major energy infrastructure developments.
Responsibilities Support the development and execution of comprehensive commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, checklists, and testing documentation for utility-scale BESS projects. Participate in project meetings with engineering, construction, operations, and stakeholder teams to align commissioning activities with overall project objectives and timelines. Review engineering drawings, technical specifications, and project documentation to identify scope gaps, commissioning risks, and constructability concerns, and communicate findings to the project team.
Coordinate commissioning activities across multiple disciplines, including electrical systems, controls, SCADA, utility interconnection, and equipment vendors, to ensure cohesive and efficient execution. Execute and oversee commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through substantial completion, ensuring all systems are tested, validated, and ready for energization. Coordinate daily commissioning activities with contractors, OEMs, integrators, and project stakeholders to maintain schedules, manage priorities, and drive timely issue resolution.
Perform field inspections to verify installation quality, equipment readiness, and system functionality prior to energization, and document any deficiencies or corrective actions. Support and witness Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), functional testing, and performance verification activities for major equipment and systems. Troubleshoot electrical, controls, communication, and system integration issues during startup and commissioning, working systematically to resolve technical problems and restore functionality.
Coordinate the commissioning of battery systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, SCADA systems, communication networks, and medium-voltage electrical infrastructure. Interface directly with utilities, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), contractors, owner’s representatives, and operations teams throughout the commissioning process to ensure compliance and clear communication. Support operator training by helping prepare and deliver turnover documentation, operating procedures, and handoff activities to operations and maintenance teams.
Document lessons learned during commissioning and recommend improvements to processes, standards, and execution strategies to enhance future project performance. Build and maintain strong working relationships with vendors, suppliers, contractors, and project stakeholders to foster collaboration and effective project delivery. Essential Skills Minimum 3+ years of experience in utility-scale energy or utilities balance-of-plant (BOP) commissioning.
Strong understanding of energization safety principles and practices, particularly in high-voltage and medium-voltage environments. Proven experience with on-site commissioning activities for large energy projects, including field work and coordination with multiple stakeholders. Hands-on experience with electrical systems related to power, transmission, distribution, and balance of plant. Ability to perform site and field commissioni
