Diesel Mechanic, JFK Airport (Queens, NY) Pay: $25/hr-$37/hr Shift: 4x10s, 9pm-730am (Wed-Sat or Sun-Wed) Type of Position: Direct placement (No contract involved) Tools required! Job Description This role focuses on independently troubleshooting, diagnosing, adjusting, and repairing diesel-powered equipment and vehicles, including ground support equipment (GSE) and commercial trucks. You perform comprehensive preventative and corrective maintenance across electrical, brake, hydraulic, cooling, and power steering systems, as well as engines and standard electrical components, while maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
You work primarily with diesel trucks and a smaller number of gas engine trucks, performing bumper-to-bumper maintenance in an aviation-related setting with ground support equipment. Daily tasks are assigned through tablets, and you use mobile devices and diagnostic equipment to manage work orders and service documentation. Responsibilities Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust, and repair diesel equipment and vehicles, including engines and standard electrical components.
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance and inspections in accordance with manufacturer specifications and customer requirements. Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workspace by following 5S principles (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain). Independently perform maintenance servicing on GSE and commercial trucks following OEM specifications and internal standards. Ensure safe and secure transport of GSE and commercial trucks as required.
Diagnose and repair mechanical issues, including basic electrical repairs, on a range of GSE and commercial trucks. Use GSE and commercial truck manuals and documentation to identify repair procedures and technical information. Conduct thorough inspections, including checking vehicle hours, water and oil levels, lights, and overall condition to meet safety and operational standards. Report and discuss any damage, unusual findings, or work outside the prescribed scope with a supervisor to determine appropriate next steps.
Perform refurbishing tasks such as fabrication, body work, painting, welding, and upholstery while meeting quality and safety standards. Prioritize tasks effectively to maintain productivity and meet customer requirements and deadlines. Carry out on-call responsibilities as needed, responding promptly to urgent operational needs in line with company on-call policies. Use mobile devices and tablets to receive work assignments and document completed tasks and findings.
Perform bumper-to-bumper maintenance, including addressing check engine lights, brake repairs, and general mechanical issues on primarily diesel trucks and some gas engine trucks. Essential Skills 4+ years hands-on experience with diesel engines and diesel-powered trucks or 4+ years hands on experience doing maintenance on GSE. Proficiency in preventive maintenance on trucks, GSE, and related equipment.
Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and their maintenance and repair. Experience diagnosing and repairing electrical systems and components on vehicles and equipment. Valid driver’s license. Ability to get an airport issued ID Badge. Ability to use mobile devices, tablets, and relevant applications to receive work orders and record service information. Solid understanding of essential safety, quality, and operational protocols.
Capability to independently interpret and apply OEM specifications and technical manuals. Skill in basic fabrication, welding, painting, body work, and upholstery for refurbishing equipment.
