Job Title: New Hire Utility – Job Description The New Hire Utility role focuses on learning and supporting tube mill operations in a metals manufacturing environment. You will start as a utility employee, gaining hands-on experience across multiple departments, including machine operation, quality, packing, inspection, and material handling. Over time, you will be trained to operate equipment associated with extrusion or tube mill processes, handle aluminum products safely, and contribute to meeting production and quality goals.
After becoming a permanent employee, you will move into a specific department and can later bid into other roles as your career progresses. Responsibilities Learn to operate equipment associated with the tube mill and extrusion processes, including machines used for handling and processing aluminum products. Support tube mill operations by moving materials on and off machines using proper lifting techniques, hoists, and material handling equipment.
Assist machine operators with extrusion or casting equipment, ensuring all quality objectives and production standards are met. Perform general production support activities such as machine operating, quality checks, packing, inspection, and basic assembly line tasks. Monitor equipment and production processes, promptly report and review any unusual conditions with the lead operator or supervisors, and follow established escalation procedures.
Follow safe job practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality requirements at all times to maintain a safe and efficient work environment. Work collaboratively on a production team, communicating and interacting regularly with team members and leadership to achieve daily production goals. Adhere to union guidelines related to shift movement, job bidding, and flexibility, regardless of union membership status.
Complete all onboarding requirements, including any required screenings and documentation, within the probationary period to maintain employment eligibility. Learn and perform routine cleaning tasks related to grease, oil, and hydraulic fluids, ensuring work areas and equipment remain safe and orderly. Handle frequent lifting of 15–50 lbs and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs with assistance, including stepping over obstacles, climbing on and off machinery, and working around motorized equipment.
Perform physical tasks such as bending, pushing, and pulling objects over 15 lbs and pulling objects up to 100 lbs as needed to support production and material movement. Develop the skills needed to operate a forklift (if not already experienced), and maintain a positive, “can do” attitude toward cross-training in different departments. Maintain accurate verbal and written documentation related to production, quality checks, and safety as required in both the Utility role and future roles.
Support long shift schedules in the tube mill, including potential 10–12 hour days and up to 6 days per week, while maintaining reliability and consistent attendance. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Chesterfield, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
