Job Title: Mechanical Engineer Job Description This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design, development, and manufacturing of a torpedo launching system and related support equipment as part of a major naval defence program. You will take ownership of mechanical design activities, support prototype development and testing, and ensure that all engineering documentation and manufacturing data meet rigorous industry and military standards.
The position offers the opportunity to contribute to complex defence projects, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and support the full product lifecycle from concept through in-service support. Responsibilities Develop detailed mechanical designs using SolidWorks and other engineering tools for torpedo launching systems and associated support equipment. Build and test mechanical prototypes to support product development, performance validation, and design refinement.
Create comprehensive engineering documentation, including design specifications, test procedures, and Manufacturing Data Packs (MDPs). Perform stress and structural calculations using engineering principles, design standards, and finite element analysis (FEA). Apply computational tools such as FEA and CFD to evaluate mechanical performance and optimize designs. Design sheet metal and machined components that meet functional, manufacturability, and durability requirements.
Manage and maintain design documentation and manufacturing data to ensure traceability, accuracy, and configuration control. Provide engineering support during manufacturing, assembly, testing, installation, and in-service support activities. Assist production teams with technical issues, troubleshooting, and issue resolution to keep projects on schedule. Review and approve mechanical design work to ensure compliance with engineering standards, quality requirements, and best practices.
Ensure all design documentation and Manufacturing Data Packs are complete, accurate, and fit for purpose before release. Support compliance with ISO requirements, industry standards, and applicable military standards throughout the design and manufacturing process. Define mechanical engineering work packages, including scope, effort estimates, and cost projections. Contribute technical solutions and estimates for bids, proposals, and customer inquiries, helping to secure and deliver new work.
Identify technical risks, document them clearly, and develop mitigation plans to reduce project and product risk. Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines to integrate mechanical designs into complex systems. Apply structured and methodical approaches to analytical problem solving and continuous product and process improvement. Essential Skills Minimum of 7 years of mechanical design experience, including hands-on experience designing sheet metal and machined parts.
Proficiency in 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, for mechanical design and documentation. Strong experience with finite element analysis (FEA) for stress and structural evaluation. Experience working in regulated environments that follow ISO requirements and industry standards. Experience in defence, aerospace, or naval engineering environments. Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, stress analysis, and structural integrity.
Demonstrated analytical problem solving using structured and methodical approaches. Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA). Experience with environmental testing such as thermal, vibration, and shock, including use of relevant test equipment. Ability to create clear, detailed engineering documentation, including specifications, test procedures, and manufacturing data.
Strong attention to detail in engineering design and documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness. Effective interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate across engineering disciplines and with production teams. Bachelor’s degree in Mecha
