Job Title: Welder – Heavy Fabrication (Mining Equipment) Job Description This role focuses on heavy fabrication and repair work on large mining buckets and related industrial equipment. You will weld thick materials, structural components, and wear parts using MIG and flux core processes, ensuring safety, precision, and long-lasting durability in a covered shop environment. Responsibilities Perform MIG welding on large mining buckets and heavy equipment components, including structural repairs, rebuilds, and modifications using appropriate welding techniques.
Carry out flux core welding with 3/32" flux core wire on thick plate and hard plate materials, ensuring strong and reliable welds. Heat, bend, cut, and grind steel as part of heavy fabrication work, following technical specifications and job requirements. Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols to plan and execute welding and fabrication tasks accurately. Conduct minor fit-up work independently, preparing components for welding and ensuring proper alignment and joint configuration.
Operate heavy-duty fabrication tools and equipment, including grinders, torches, plasma cutters, air chisels, needle scalers, and oxy/fuel cutting torches. Use air arc (arc air) equipment to gouge and prepare weld areas and perform repair work on heavy equipment components. Safely operate overhead and jib cranes and apply proper rigging techniques when moving and positioning large steel components.
Inspect welds for quality, strength, and compliance with specifications, and make adjustments or repairs as needed. Apply pre-heat and post-heat procedures where required to maintain material integrity and weld quality, particularly on thick and hard plate. Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, following zero-harm behaviors and contributing to a world-class safety culture. Successfully complete and pass a welding test as part of the hiring process and maintain high welding standards throughout employment. Essential Skills At least 5 years of applicable MIG welding experience on heavy equipment, thick plate, and structural components. Proficiency in MIG welding processes, including welding large-scale mining buckets and heavy equipment components. Hands-on experience with flux core welding using 3/32" flux core wire and an understanding of how it differs from hard wire.
Strong fabrication skills, including heating, bending, cutting, and grinding steel, and performing structural repairs and rebuilds. Ability to weld plate thickness from 1/2" up to and including 6" thick while maintaining weld quality and integrity. Capability to stack welds 3" or more in height or thickness with weld passes 24" or longer. Experience welding hard plate materials such as 400BHN and 500BHN; experience with stainless weld wire is a plus.
Ability to use and run an air arc (arc air) for gouging and repair work. Competence in using 4.5" and 9" grinders, air chisels, needle scalers, and oxy/fuel cutting torches. Ability to safely use overhead and jib cranes and apply proper rigging techniques for heavy components. Skill in reading and understanding basic drawings and weld symbols to perform accurate fabrication and welding tasks.
Ability to perform minor fit-up work independently, preparing joints and components for welding. Strong safety awareness and adherence to safety procedures and zero-harm behaviors. Effective teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others. Ability to pass a welding test as a condition of hire. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on large mining buckets, heavy industrial equipment, or similar heavy fabrication environments.
