Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-volume blood collections and specimen processing in a fast-paced patient service center. You support patients of all ages, from newborns to older adults, while maintaining strict quality, safety, and regulatory standards. You assist with troubleshooting, training, workflow improvement, and provide excellent customer service to ensure an efficient and compassionate experience for every patient.

Responsibilities Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups, including pediatric and geriatric patients. Complete an average of 20–40 blood draws per day personally, contributing to a team total of approximately 150–165 draws per day. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, including blood, urine, fecal, and other required samples.

Properly explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures in a clear, courteous, and professional manner. Demonstrate and use appropriate techniques with straight needles and butterfly needles. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all orders to ensure 100% accuracy. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order. Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature to maintain specimen integrity.

Follow all protocols and procedures specific to each test or collection type to ensure accurate and reliable results. Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to confirm correctness. Perform data entry of patient and specimen information accurately and in a timely manner. Maintain patient and specimen information logs in accordance with organizational policies.

Process billing information and collect payments when required. Answer telephone calls, provide information, and read laboratory results as needed to satisfy inquiries. Perform administrative and clerical duties as necessary to support daily operations. Provide superior customer service to all patients, ensuring a respectful and positive experience. Travel to additional sites when needed to support coverage and workflow.

Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow. Participate in training and help make workflow recommendations to improve efficiency and quality. Attend annual departmental trainings and maintain knowledge of current procedures and regulations. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper decontamination procedures.

Use reliable transportation to travel between sites when required, following driving and safety guidelines. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. Minimum of 3 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Demonstrated experience performing high-volume blood draws and specimen collection. Proficiency in performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection techniques for all age groups.

Ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles safely and effectively. Strong data entry skills with attention to accuracy and timeliness. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High school diploma or GED required. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service in a healthcare or laboratory setting. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy environment.

Comfort working under minimal supervision while maintaining high quality standards. Ability to pass a standardized color blindness test. Reliable transportation and a clean driving record, if travel between sites is required. Flexibility to work overtime as needed. At least 2 years
