Job Title: R&D Engineering Technician – Catheter Assembly and Testing Job Description This role supports research and development activities focused on testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, and assembling catheters, with an emphasis on balloon catheter technology. You will work primarily in a clean room environment, using microscopes and precision hand tools to build and evaluate small, complex assemblies that contribute to innovative electromechanical catheter products.
Responsibilities Perform testing, inspecting, and troubleshooting of catheter products, with a focus on balloon catheters and related subcomponents. Assemble catheters and small subassemblies using microscopes, tweezers, razor blades, and other precision hand tools. Conduct mechanical testing, including Instron/tensile testing, balloon compliance testing, and compliance and fatigue testing, following established protocols.
Work under a microscope for the majority of the day to handle fine, detailed assembly and inspection tasks. Utilize clean room procedures and equipment to maintain product quality and adherence to process requirements. Apply strong tactile skills to manipulate small parts and plastics materials in tight tolerances during assembly and testing. Perform minor soldering tasks as needed to support electromechanical catheter builds, ensuring proper connections and functionality.
Document test results, inspection findings, and assembly activities accurately to support R&D development and product improvement. Collaborate with engineering and R&D team members to identify issues, suggest improvements, and support new product development. Handle and operate tools such as hot boxes and other specialized equipment used in catheter assembly and testing. Follow safety, cleanliness, and quality standards consistently within the clean room and laboratory environment.
Support troubleshooting efforts for catheter builds and test setups, helping to resolve issues quickly and effectively. Essential Skills Hands-on experience testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, and assembling small, complex components, preferably catheters. Proficiency working under a microscope for extended periods, with the ability to perform detailed assembly and inspection tasks. Experience using precision hand tools such as tweezers, razor blades, and other small instruments in a clean room or similar environment.
Familiarity with mechanical testing methods, including Instron/tensile testing, balloon compliance testing, and compliance and fatigue testing. Strong tactile skills and fine motor control for handling small parts and plastics materials accurately. Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain high quality standards in a regulated, clean room setting. Comfort working with small-scale assemblies and subcomponents in an R&D or production environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with balloon catheter assembly or general catheter manufacturing is highly desirable. Background in semiconductor or clean room manufacturing environments is a strong plus. Exposure to plastics processing or working with plastic components in precision assemblies. Ability to perform minor soldering tasks to support electromechanical catheter products.
