Job Title: Product Engineer III Job Description The Product Engineer provides technical leadership for turbocharger product development programs, guiding mechanical products from early concept and pre-development through detailed design, validation, design release, tooling kickoff, production launch, and ongoing production support. This role owns mechanical product design activities, ensures designs meet performance and quality requirements, and serves as a key technical resource across engineering programs.
Responsibilities Provide technical leadership for assigned turbocharger product development programs from concept through production and field support. Own mechanical product design activities from initial concept through production release and ongoing field support. Develop, evaluate, and release mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems. Perform or oversee geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack-up analysis, material selection, and manufacturing process evaluation.
Lead design validation activities, including creation and maintenance of DVP&R documentation, DFMEAs, test plans, and technical reports. Coordinate product testing activities and interpret validation results to confirm that designs meet performance, durability, quality, and customer requirements. Lead root cause investigations involving design, testing, manufacturing, supplier, or field-performance issues.
Implement corrective actions and design improvements through structured engineering change processes. Manage engineering documentation, including bills of material, drawings, specifications, and product release packages. Collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, testing, suppliers, customers, and other engineering groups to ensure successful product development and launch. Support tooling kickoff, production launch, and resolution of manufacturing or product-performance concerns.
Serve as a technical resource for less-experienced engineers and help guide engineering decisions across assigned programs. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. At least five years of professional mechanical or product engineering experience. Demonstrated experience owning the design and release of mechanical components or assemblies. Proven experience taking a product from concept through validation, production release, and launch.
Proficiency with a 3D CAD platform such as Creo, NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or a comparable system. Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including mechanical design and product engineering. Ability to perform and interpret GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis. Experience with design validation processes and documentation. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality, testing, suppliers, and customers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in new product development for rotating mechanical products such as engines, heavy equipment, agricultural equipment, automotive components, compressors, pumps, transmissions, or hydraulic systems. Experience in mechanical development and mechanical design for complex assemblies. Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems for managing engineering data and releases.
Experience leading DFMEAs, DVP&R creation, and structured engineering change processes. Ability to mentor and support less-experienced engineers. Strong problem-solving skills with experience leading root cause investigations. Clear written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports and collaborating with stakeholders. Work Environment This is an on-site position located in Shelbyville, IL, working primarily in an engineering and manufacturing environment focused on turbocharger product development.
