Job Title: Welder and Fitter Job Description This role focuses on setting up and operating welding equipment to produce high‑quality sheet metal and structural steel products according to detailed blueprints and customer specifications. You will interpret complex drawings, perform precise measurements, and utilize MIG and TIG welding techniques to assemble and weld a variety of enclosures, boxes, and specialty weldments.
You consistently follow safety practices while working in a fast‑paced fabrication and manufacturing environment. Responsibilities Set up welding equipment, including adjusting speeds, settings, and parameters to meet job requirements. Read and interpret complicated drawings and blueprints, including decimal dimensions and detailed fabrication specifications. Utilize quality instruments to verify that work meets blueprint and customer specifications, ensuring consistent product quality.
Assemble and weld a variety of sheet metal products with varying thicknesses and gauges, including 3/8 inch to 1 inch steel. Perform MIG welding as the primary process, focusing on horizontal and downhill welds, with occasional TIG welding as needed. Weld wiring enclosures, boxes, and other special weldments required for production runs. Perform accurate fitting of components based on blueprint specifications prior to welding.
Use grinders and related fabrication tools to prepare, finish, and refine welds and assemblies. Measure angles and dimensions precisely using tape measures and quality instruments down to 1/64 inch. Follow established safety practices at all times, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to plant safety procedures. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules and quality standards.
Participate in training to learn machinery, processes, and best practices, and apply this knowledge on assigned shifts. Maintain a clean and organized work area to support safe and efficient operations. Essential Skills 2–5 years of experience in job shop, fabrication shop, or manufacturing welding roles, which may include a combination of welding technical trade school and hands‑on work. Proficient experience reading and interpreting complicated blueprints, including decimal dimensions and detailed fabrication drawings.
Ability to utilize complex blueprints to perform fitting, setup, and welding for structural steel and sheet metal components. Strong MIG welding skills, particularly in horizontal and downhill positions. Experience assembling and welding sheet metal products with thicknesses ranging from 3/8 inch to 1 inch steel. Capability to weld wiring enclosures, boxes, and special weldments for production. Proficiency with grinders and common fabrication tools used in welding and fitting.
Ability to measure angles and dimensions accurately using tape measures and quality instruments down to 1/64 inch. Solid understanding of quality assurance practices and use of measurement tools to verify compliance with blueprints and customer specifications. Commitment to following safety procedures and using required personal protective equipment in a manufacturing environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a job shop or fabrication environment with a variety of welding projects and materials.
Technical trade school or formal welding training is beneficial. Experience with TIG welding for occasional applications. Ability to work from complex drawings for both sheet metal and structural components. Experience working with aluminum sheet metal is a plus. Comfort using a range of quality instruments for inspection and measurement. Willingness to work second or third shift and participate in overtime when scheduled.
