JOB TITLE: Pipefitter I 15.00/hr JOB CLASS NUMBER: TEC117 PAY GRADE: G-02 FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt BUSINESS UNIT NAME: Water Distribution REPORTS TO: Water/Sewer Foreperson 1 SUPERVISORY WORK: None Summary Pipefitter I is an entry level position responsible for the installation and repair of water lines, service lines, isolation valves, water taps, water meter boxes, fire hydrants, and other water components.
The pipefitter I is required to be available for emergency calls and is considered an essential position. This is a manual labor-intensive position and is required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Working significant amounts of overtime is to be expected with this position. Punctuality and attendance are necessary. On the job training and support is available. This is a career ladder position; with training and experience promotion to Pipefitter II is available.

Immediately report injuries for prompt diagnosis and treatment. 3) Make regular suggestions for safety process improvements to support continuous safety improvement Essential Responsibilities Maintenance and Inspection Assist in the repair and replace of damaged water lines, service lines, isolation valves, water taps, water meter boxes, fire hydrants, and other water components.
Understand and perform the function of exercising valves throughout the water distribution system Perform daily inspection of assigned vehicles, trailers, and other equipment. Work in confined areas (streets, alleys, easements, etc.) to install and maintain water services. Work in trenches and follow all trench shoring procedures and understand the hazards associated with trenching and shoring. Perform manual labor in the completion of duties as assigned.
Administrative Participate in on-call rotations to quickly resolve after-hours service disruptions. Read, interpret, and understand maps and drawings. Safety Work safely in traffic and set up traffic control according to the Texas MUTCD. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, including the proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment. Customer Service Represent the City of Amarillo in a positive manner when working around customers and while performing all duties.
Other Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Training Opportunities The Pipefitter I can expect training and career growth opportunities. This position does not require the following, but these are important skills to achieve for advancement consideration. Pipefitter I is encouraged to learn excavation techniques to expose water systems in need of repair. Pipefitter I will have the opportunity to attend trenching and shoring training.
Pipefitter I is encouraged to learn operation techniques for light to heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, skid loaders, and mini excavators. Pipefitter I am encouraged to obtain a class A driver’s license. Minimum Requirements Minimum requirements for Pipefitter I include: Valid Texas C class Driver's License. High School diploma or equivalent (GED) Preferred experience in water works, utilities, or another related field Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to perform preventative maintenance to equipment, such as backhoe, 2.5-ton truck with trailer, air compressor, water pumps, jackhammers, air tamps, pipe cutter, portable generator, tap machine, drills, various hand tools, and shoring equipment.
Have fundamental knowledge of hand tools. Ability to read and understand maps and use location equipment. Knowledge of safety equipment is necessary to perform job duties. This position requires work in heavy traffic areas. Pipefitter I must be able to see and hear to an acceptable level for safety.
