Join us as Private Banking & Wealth Management General Counsel Be a trusted senior legal partner to the Private Banking & Wealth Management (PBWM) franchise, shaping strategic outcomes and overseeing legal delivery through Centres of Expertise (CoEs) Play a key role in influencing business strategy, commercial outcomes, and risk decisions by providing strategic legal advice on material legal, regulatory, and reputational matters Take ownership of the legal risk profile for PBWM, ensuring alignment to Group risk appetite, governance, and regulatory frameworks Our team operates within a hybrid working model so you'll work from home some of the time, coming into the office at least two days per week to collaborate closely with your colleagues What you'll do As Private Banking & Wealth Management General Counsel, you'll enable commercial growth and innovation by embedding legal insight into strategic decision-making and acting as a trusted advisor to senior business stakeholders.
You'll maintain strong relationships with the PBWM Executive Committee (ExCo), business leaders, and product heads, while anticipating legal demand and influencing strategic direction. In this role, you'll provide oversight of the Wealth & Investments CoE, ensuring output aligns with franchise priorities and risk appetite. You'll also own the end-to-end legal risk position for PBWM, including reporting into the Group risk framework, and act as the final escalation point for novel or material legal risks that cannot be resolved at the CoE or Capability Pod level.
In addition, you’ll be: Making senior trade-off decisions where legal capacity is constrained, aligning prioritisation to business value and risk, and managing senior stakeholder expectations on delivery and legal support Leading and developing a high-performing legal leadership team, building capability, engagement, and succession strength Providing an enterprise-wide approach by collaborating with legal centres of expertise and business stakeholders to deliver joined-up legal services across the wider bank Contributing to the priorities of the Legal, Governance & Regulatory Affairs (LG&RA) function and upholding strong corporate governance and control standards Providing effective contribution to relevant boards and committees in line with governance requirements and applicable legal and regulatory obligations Fostering a culture of collaborative working across the function, particularly in the CoEs, and working closely with other Franchise General Counsels to triage, prioritise, and resource Working with the LG&RA ExCo to build a flexible core of expertise across teams, encouraging and facilitating career development opportunities The skills you'll need We're looking for someone with proven experience operating as a senior legal adviser to executive stakeholders, influencing strategic and commercial decisions.
You must bring deep expertise in banking and financial services law, with strong knowledge of PBWM products and regulatory frameworks. To succeed in this role, you should also have a demonstrated ability to balance commercial outcomes with risk appetite, making high-impact, judgement-based decisions. In addition, you’ll need: A strong understanding of legal risk management frameworks, governance, and regulatory obligations Commercial acumen, with an understanding of the wider organisational strategy and competitive environment A track record of leading senior legal teams and developing leadership capability Strong external engagement capability, including experience interacting with regulators and industry bodies Experience working in complex, matrixed operating models, with oversight of distributed delivery teams or CoEs Hours 35 Job Posting Closing Date: 25/09/2026 Ways of Working:Hybrid
