The S&B is Grinnell College’s independent, student-run newspaper, founded in 1894. We are an award-winning publication with a monthly readership of more than 75,000 students, alumni, faculty, staff, citizens of Grinnell and many others. In spring 2026, The S&B won the Iowa College Media Association Best Newspaper of the Year award for its 2025-2026 coverage. The S&B covers everything from breaking news to long-term investigative stories.

Staff writers: Work with editors to pitch story ideas and produce journalistic content every week The process of writing a weekly story typically includes conducting several interviews, developing knowledge of the story topic, redrafting the story based on editor edits and clarifying missing or inaccurate information Collaborate with editors, writers, visuals/audio/video team on at least one long-form investigative project on a beat of interest (i.
social justice, ii. environment and climate, iii. health, iv. legislation and politics, v. lifestyle) per semester We are looking to hire a student with strong writing, researching and interviewing skills. Staff writers must also be able to receive and incorporate feedback, meet deadlines and apply a critical and creative lens to current events. They must also be able to arrange travel (The S&B can assist) to cover stories outside of Grinnell’s campus.
Staff writers are expected to work approximately 9 hours a week.
